Indian Television shows : Where are we heading ?

"After a long working day, I closed my laptop and turned on the TV to relax a bit. The channel was "Bindas-India's number 1 youth channel". I was shocked to see the logo of the channel itself. The thing which concerned me the most was that they were promoting their channel with a finger-up symbol to show the youth orientation and to show that they are the No-1 Channel. Is this all what today's youth is about - One finger up? There's so much more to us then a finger pointing upwards symbol.

As if the symbol was not enough, the show was even more ridiculous. They call it "Dadagiri : Revenge of Sexes". You will hear less beep sound on a busy traffic roads of Bangalore than there were on that show. They were swearing as if there life was hanging on it. Its a shame that its a Pan-India Channel. I do have the liberty of choosing any other channel, but I felt it was disgusting watching this. I do not claim to be a moral guru, but I really felt hurt with the concept. This mind-set is slowly being injected into minds of small-town youth as they are more prone to this type of exposure. The girls were not far behind the guys in this competition of swearing. I do not have a gender bias either, but it was unpleasantly surprising to see all those.

I had seen enough to disgust me and I had to push the Red Button on my remote control. I preferred to work which seemed better than the TV which is supposed to entertain us.

After some days, I found a link ( "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imVLcA66H8E&feature=related") which was being circulated like anything on the internet. The title was "Best of Raghu's Abuses". I had heard about MTV Roadies but what I saw in the video was really saddening. Where did this guy get the courage to say the things he said on the show?. I really don't know. Is this what we really want to show to the upcoming generation of India? Is this the sort of cultural upbringing for the new generation?

What happened to the Indian Television? Where are those shows which could imbibe teaching on Indian Values and Morales? What led to the demise of good shows on TV Channel? There are some questions going on in my mind whenever I press the Red Button on my remote. Where is material like "Ek Chidiya, Anek Chidiya" showing us the value of working together? What happened to "Ek Anek Aur Ekta" teaching us the virtue of unity? All I see on Tv these days is a slow dosage of poison filling out blood on "How to back-stab your friend", "How to abuse effectively" and things which I can't write with my trembling hands. Add to that the proud looking ALPHA-male feeling which the participant show they are having, after they are done swearing. We have a plethora of so called genuinely unreal Reality shows.

We used to watch "Mile sur mera tumhara, to sur bane hamara", even here we pass the same message, if your and my rhyme gel together it will make our rhyme. It will make OUR song. We use to see 'SURABHI' a very intellectual program which imparted knowledge about unexplored area/culture of India with very sophisticated and cultured hosts. "Malgudi Days", a very nice program sequence of from south India. "Gul Gulshan Gulfam" from the very northern part of India. Aren't they the program which shows the diverse culture of India and even then showing the unity of India, depicting the true meaning of India.

But now if we see, TV is showing the personal grudges, unhealthy politics, back stabbing your friends, unhealthy competition and worse part the Abuses... Shows like "exchange your mom" and "Big switch-change the family" shows how less respect young generation has for the elder generation. And above all, I am not very sure where is the censor board guys are sleeping over all these abusive champions. Do we really have a censor board that monitors the programs on the TV channels, I wonder?

Would we keep on looking at all what is happening? Shouldn't we take a step to stop this nonsense and let some good things coming out of TV for our current and future generation? I am not sure, what we can do for it but just thought of sharing it and know your thoughts. May be we all together can take this to some highly respected individuals (like Kiran Bedi etc...) in our country and take their guidance to get something substantial done."

  4. Really it's pathetic to see such TV channels and they think that they are doing such a big thing for country and people. It's good to adopt good things from any person or culture but need to know our limits. Not all indian like these things but they say it's their right to information and braodcasting ;)

  5. Mayank good point you made here but the I think we cant blame only the TV channels. If you will ask young generation they give thumbs up for these kind of shows. You would have seen the no of people turned up for the auditions of MTV Roadies. May be its just a wave which will pass soon :)

    Keep writing!

  6. Absolutely right.. Many of the shows aired in TV today are absolute nonsense and they impart a negative attitude in today's youth which they mistakingly consider 'cool'.

  7. I am in unison with the viewpoint. What I fail to understand is that how could somebody let himself/herslf be subjected to all this nonsense and endure whatever comes en-route, for what? Publicity.. I mean shame on those who adhere to this mentality. If swearing your guts out in front of millions is the only way to prove that alpha characteristics, well i have no words! I have really become sick of so called reality-shows, and i have come to believe that what they show is not at all real, but what they would like to see as real in order to make their business, TRP etc going great guns. No matter what impact it will make on the immature minds of young-viewers. I mean, it's not very hard to imagine the effect of shows like "Emotional Atyachaar" on a kid who is just in his/her school days. Given enough exposure to this mental poison he/she will sooner or later come to a belief that this is how the world works, there is no place for faith, for that matter it's utter foolishness to be faithful in any relationship and god knows what else! Imagine a whole lot of generation growing up with these kinds of thought. A great place indeed we are carving for our future generations by letting all this happen and silently smiling when somebody abuses, cusses, deceives, back-stabs somebody else on the TV! More than the gullible audience the onus goes to the lampoons who originate the ideas of soft-selling immorality and sex just for their own profits. They should understand that they have an important responsibility to cater to. If they can't bring in any radical change for good, atleast leave pretty much everything as it is rather than making a filthy rot of it. All being said, it's in the hands of youth, us, to surrender or object to what is being fed to us. I mean come on, this was not what Doordarshan used to teach us, all through our growing years!

  9. Good point made here... I also happen to see that channel while my collage going, brother was watching it. He seems to like it... But I hated every bit of it.

Still remember those days of 'SURABHI' Malgudi Days, Gul Gulshan Gulfam... wonderful programs to watch it with your family while having dinner...

TV channels are here for ratings. More rating more adds. And more adds means more money. They are not here to teach morality to the society. So it all depends on people who have to make a choice to either watch it or not...

  10. It is true and very sad to know that our new generation is watching such crap shows and the popularity of these shows are increasing. Govt should take some action to stop such shows which just spoiling our youth.

  11. @all: thanks for all the words of encouragement.
@MayankK: Roadies in itself is not central to the debate here. It is the presentation that carries the show that is a concern.

Kids/youths enjoying the show just goes to show the lack of good viewing choices for them.
they will realise the beauty of the good old programs only if we make the section aware of its existence.

Viewers dont make viewing choices based on TRPs. TRPs are means to more sponsors more money, very true and this suggests some part of the responsibility lies with the mindless patronizers. They need to do their bit too and cannot carry on in the current irresponsible fashion.

  12. Sadly, there is no public/govt body to censor programmes aired on tv but i guess its high time that govt form such a body so that we can put a stop to such kind of programmes.
But knowing the way things works in govt orgs, it would take lot of time & opposition from tv producers/channels lobby.

  13. Completely agree !!
Do we have any means to voice the concern to Information and Broadcast ministry / TV channels.
It is true that some reality shows are good which enrich talent of the youngsters rather than cashing on them, like TVS sa re ga ma.
There are similar nonsense shows in regional channels too.

  16. Why don't you just change the channel if you don't like it? This is only the beginning of a variety of software that will be broadcasted, and will not adhere to any one person's boundaries.

One person's upbringing and sensibilities do not define Indian culture. Every culture grows, evolves and redefines itself with time. However, for those who like the way it was, there's ample content being aired.

Censorship is the last thing that must be brought in - not only does it rob the viewer of choices, but also helps red tapism at different levels. With the Internet providing every voyeur the meal he wants, there is no point to censorship any more.

Shows like these give you choice.I for one, do not like the archaic programming that used to happen till a few years ago. Companies produced sub-standard material in the garb of "sending a message"-all clones of each other because they garnered TRPs. Such softwares have systematically programmed the Indian viewer to expect a particular type of entertainment, and take offense at the drop of a hat.

The makers of MTV Roadies in particular have constantly propagated the importance of free speech, respect of women, being oneself at all costs, the strength of unity and despised double standards. The language Raghu speaks is absolutely 100% unadulterated "Youngistan Language". For people who use it, beeps don't matter - they know what's being said and why.

You need to view it with an open mind; but if you are offended by it, please choose to pick the remote and play that umpteenth clone of "Kyunkii..". We as a nation have long suffered from moral policing and the attitudes of our so called culture conservationists - had it been for them, we'd have no Konark, Khajuraho or Elephanta. So, please spare us ignominy of intolerance.

  17. A very thought-provoking glance on the current media programms. It will be too late to save our future generation from such destructive and perverted ideas. We can talk about the freedom and the rights of all sorts. At the same time we need to think about how much we contribute to a better world, a better generation. I really feel sympathy for the young people who are unaware of the values their parent's parents held. Thats why we live at least as we do now. But what we do for our younger ones? Are we leading them to a better peaceful world or a miserable valueless one?

Please think about what we can do for it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nice thought! But we are thinking only about the TV which should set an example for the next generation... How about our way of life, our talk, our response to certain things..

@ TV, what can we practically do...Govt already provided some option to us something like CAS.. With this, we do have the option to select the channels which we want our kins to view and not to view...

    So thats it...

We cannot depend on our Govt to filter for our kins.. We have to.. Thats our job... :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. @ Thomas CAS is meant for blocking channels, which is not what we are talking about here in general. Anyway, point noted.

  20. And they do all this in the name of "Freedom Of Expression" / "Freedom Of Speech". What double standards. I really miss the good old days of Surabhi, the quizes, the cultural roundup of the northeastern states and from other far off places. We live in a world of make believe reality, which is akin to junk food, very tasty and nicely packaged. This is the age of marketing. Masala sells, even if that masala happens to be someone's pain and suffering. Shock value dominates and the television industry feeds on it. The question we have to ask ourselves here is - Where did we let go? / What have we learnt since our schooldays? / What will our children be like, when they grow up watching such nonsense on the television? Are we ready for the next round - the Result?
